Top 5 Dive Sites in Greater Manchester for Beginners

If you're ready to learn to scuba dive in Lancashire or take your open water diver course in Manchester, you're in luck—Greater Manchester is home to a variety of accessible dive sites perfect for beginners. From purpose-built inland training centres to epic open water destinations for the more adventurous, the region provides ideal locations to start your diving journey.

At Van Overbeek Technical, we help new divers enter the underwater world with confidence, offering PADI certifications in Greater Manchester, as well as SDI, TDI, and RAID certification options for those progressing beyond entry-level training.

Below is our curated list of the top 5 beginner-friendly dive sites, along with how we use each one throughout your training pathway—from first fins to technical depths.

1. Capernwray Dive Centre – The Ideal Starting Point

📍 Location: Over Kellet, Lancashire

Capernwray is our go-to site for beginner and intermediate diver training. Just over an hour from Manchester, this former limestone quarry offers reliable visibility, usually between 6 to 15 metres, and features a supportive environment with full facilities, perfect for divers who are just starting out.

Why we use it:

  • Primary site for our Open Water Diver Course in Manchester.
  • Home base for Drysuit Diving Training in Manchester.
  • Ideal for PADI, SDI, and RAID certification dives.

Features:

  • Submerged attractions like helicopters, planes, and gnome gardens.
  • On-site café with hot meals and heated indoor space.
  • Equipment hire and gas fills including air, nitrox, and trimix.

2. The Delph Watersports Centre – For Skill Refinement

📍 Location: Eccleston, Lancashire

The Delph is another inland quarry frequently used for diver training, though with less consistent visibility than Capernwray. While it’s not as picturesque or beginner-friendly for open water dives, it’s very useful for confined skill sessions and drysuit practice.

Why we use it:

  • Ideal for drysuit checkouts and low-visibility drills.
  • Occasionally used for foundational SDI certifications in Greater Manchester.

Facilities:

  • Gas fills (air only)
  • Basic site infrastructure
  • Quiet mid-week sessions for focused skill development

3. Coniston Water – Intermediate Skill Building in the Wild

📍 Location: South Lakes, Cumbria

Coniston Water is one of our preferred intermediate training locations, offering a taste of natural, open water diving. While not used for beginner sessions, it’s perfect for newly certified divers looking to build confidence and explore new challenges.

Why we use it:

  • Great for navigation, buoyancy, and equipment configuration practice.
  • Entry-level site for TDI certification preparation.

Conditions:

  • Freshwater lake with gradually sloping entry points.
  • Requires adequate exposure protection year-round.

4. Wast Water – Advanced Technical Training Ground

📍 Location: Western Lake District

Wast Water is England’s deepest lake, plunging to an incredible 75 metres. Due to its remote location, limited surface access, and technical depth, it's used exclusively for the final phases of advanced technical training.

Why we use it:

  • Reserved for high-level TDI and RAID certification dives.
  • Ideal for trimix training, decompression procedures, and deep diving drills.

Important: Not suitable for beginner or intermediate divers. This site is only used for the latter stages of technical courses due to its complexity and isolation.

5. Anglesey & The Clyde – Coastal and Wreck Diving

📍 Location: North Wales & West of Scotland

Once you’re confident in open water, join us on our dive trips to Anglesey or the Clyde—excellent sites for coastal wreck diving and advanced exploration. These trips are often the first taste of UK sea diving for divers progressing into more adventurous paths.

Why we use them:

  • Great for TDI certification, wreck diving, and RAID technical training.
  • Stunning scenery, marine life, and challenging conditions.
